Windham has grown fast. It’s a largely residential town on I-93 at Exit 3, with suburban subdivisions, open land, and lake neighborhoods on Cobbetts Pond and Canobie Lake.
Dom’s Workshop, Inc. is a residential general contractor serving Windham homeowners. We remodel kitchens and bathrooms, finish basements, and build additions, garages, and new homes. One point of contact runs the job from the first walkthrough to the punch list.

The kinds of homes we see in Windham
Subdivision colonials from the last few decades
Much of Windham’s housing was built during its population growth: large colonials and contemporaries on wooded lots in neighborhoods off Route 111 and Route 28. These houses usually aren’t failing. They’re dated. Common requests include builder-grade kitchens that need better storage and finishes, a primary bath that was never updated, and big unfinished basements ready to become living space.
Cobbetts Pond and Canobie Lake
Cobbetts Pond is just east of the center of town, and Canobie Lake runs along the town line. Route 111A (Range Road) passes between the two. Many lake homes here were seasonal camps that have since been enlarged, and some sit close to the water on narrow lots. Remodeling them means working within shoreland rules, dealing with tight access for materials, and tying older additions into the original structure.
The town center and older farmhouses
The historic town center and the Searles School and Chapel area have older homes that need a careful approach. Expect irregular framing, older foundations, and owners who want to keep the original character.

A closer look at a Windham basement finish
Many Windham colonials have a full, poured-concrete basement with a walkout or daylight windows on at least one side. That makes them good candidates for real living space. Here’s what we plan for first:
- Moisture. We look for signs of water, check the grading and gutters outside, and decide on the right insulation and wall system before any framing goes up.
- Egress. Any bedroom needs a code-compliant way out. A walkout wall makes this simpler, and an egress window works when there isn’t one.
- Mechanicals. The boiler or furnace, water heater, and any well equipment or water treatment system all need access. We lay out the rooms around them.
- Bathroom plumbing. If there’s no rough-in, we work out how to drain a lower-level bath, which sometimes calls for an up-flush or ejector system.
- Septic. In homes on private septic, adding a bedroom may require checking the system’s design capacity.
Windham basement projects usually go one of a few ways. Families with kids often want a playroom or media room near a full bath. Someone who works from home may want a quiet office. If a parent or adult child is moving in, the plan is usually a guest suite with its own bath. The layout we suggest depends on which of these fits your household.
Permits and planning in Windham
Windham has its own building department, and most structural, mechanical, and addition work needs a permit. We can take care of permits for you and schedule the inspections. On lake lots, we also check shoreland requirements before finalizing a design.

Windham remodeling FAQ
Can you turn my Windham basement into a full living space with a bathroom?
Usually, yes. We plan moisture control, egress, and bathroom drainage before framing. If you’re on septic, we also check whether the system can handle a new bedroom.
Do you work on Cobbetts Pond and Canobie Lake homes?
Yes. We review shoreland limits, lot access, and the condition of older additions before we design.
Our kitchen is builder-grade. Is a full remodel worth it, or should we just update?
It depends on the layout. If the layout works, new cabinets, counters, and lighting can be enough. If it doesn’t, rethinking the layout usually gets more out of the space. We’ll walk you through both options.
Can you build a bonus room over the garage?
Often, yes. It depends on the existing framing, the roof pitch, and access. We look at it on site.
Who handles the permit?
We can take care of permits for you.
