Does Dom’s Workshop build custom new homes in Rockingham County, NH?
Yes. Dom’s Workshop builds custom new homes on your lot in Newton, Plaistow, Kingston and towns across Rockingham County, NH. You can bring your own plans or work with your designer. As your general contractor, we coordinate the site work, septic, well, permits, trades and inspections.
Can I build a new house on my own lot?
Usually, yes, if the lot can support a house, a septic system and a well where there is no town sewer or water. Before you commit, we walk the lot with you and look at frontage, setbacks, soils, wetlands, ledge and driveway access, and we bring in the surveyor and septic designer early.
What should I check before buying a building lot in Southern New Hampshire?
Check whether the land can support a septic system and a well before you buy. Ask for soil test results, look for wetlands, ledge and steep grades, and confirm road frontage and setbacks with the town. According to NHDES, lots under 5 acres created since July 1, 1967 should have state subdivision approval. The NHDES guide Before You Buy a Property is a good checklist.
How does septic approval work for a new home in New Hampshire?
A permitted New Hampshire septic designer prepares the plan, and NHDES must issue an Approval for Construction before the system is built. After installation, a state inspector checks the system, and NHDES issues an Approval for Operation before it can be covered or used. We schedule the build around both approvals.
What are the steps to building a custom home with Dom’s Workshop?
It starts with a lot and plan review, then a written scope and estimate, then septic approval and the building permit, then construction and inspections. On site, the usual order is clearing and excavation, foundation, framing, roof and windows, rough plumbing, electrical and mechanical, insulation, drywall, finishes, and final inspection. You have one point of contact the whole way.
How long does it take to build a new home?
It depends mostly on design, approvals and weather, so we set the schedule once the plans and permits are in hand. Septic design approval, town permits, material lead times and winter conditions all affect the timeline. We give you a realistic schedule instead of a guess and keep you updated as the work moves.
Can you build a new home during a New Hampshire winter?
Yes, with cold-weather precautions. Footings have to sit below the frost line, and fresh concrete has to be protected from freezing while it cures, which can add time and cost. Many homeowners use the winter for design, septic approval and permits so they can break ground in spring.
Should I hire a general contractor or a home builder for a custom home?
For a custom home on your own lot, a general contractor who builds custom homes gives you one accountable team for the site work, trades, permits and inspections. That is how Dom’s Workshop works: you own the land and make the design choices, and we plan, schedule and build the house.
Home Additions
Family rooms, primary suites, in-law suites, mudrooms and second stories. See home additions
Do you build home additions in the Newton, NH area?
Yes. Dom’s Workshop builds home additions in Newton, Plaistow, Kingston, Atkinson, Hampstead, Danville and across Rockingham County, NH. That includes family rooms, primary suites, in-law suites, mudrooms and second-story additions.
Is it better to build out or build up?
It depends on your lot, your foundation and your septic system. Building out keeps rooms on one level but uses yard space and has to meet setbacks. Building up saves yard space, but the existing foundation and framing must be able to carry the new load. We look at both options during the first visit.
Do I need an architect for a home addition?
Most additions need drawings your town will accept, and structural changes usually need an engineer’s review. If you already have a designer, we build from their plans. If not, we can help you line up design and engineering so the drawings match your budget.
Do I need a building permit for an addition in New Hampshire?
Yes. An addition needs a building permit from your town, and plumbing, electrical and mechanical work usually need their own permits. Each town’s building department enforces the New Hampshire State Building Code with its own process, so we plan the schedule around your town.
Will adding a bedroom affect my septic system?
It can. Septic systems in New Hampshire are approved for a set number of bedrooms, and NHDES requires an Approval for Construction before the load on an existing system is increased. We check your septic approval early so the design doesn’t stall at the permit stage.
What if my house is near a pond, lake or river?
New Hampshire’s shoreland rules may apply. According to NHDES, new construction within 250 feet of protected waters generally needs a Shoreland Permit, and coastal lots may also sit in a flood zone. We check this before design begins.
How long does a home addition take?
It depends on the size, the design, permits and weather. Planning, design and permitting often take as long as the build itself, so we set a realistic schedule once the scope is agreed and keep you updated as the work moves.
Can we stay in the house while you build an addition?
Usually, yes. Most of the work happens outside the existing house until the addition is connected, and we plan that tie-in so the noisy, dusty days are short and you know when they’re coming.
Full Remodels & Whole-Home Renovations
Whole-home and multi-room remodels, planned and built as one project. See whole-home remodeling
Do you do whole-home renovations and full remodels?
Yes. Dom’s Workshop plans and builds whole-home renovations and multi-room remodels across Rockingham County, NH. That can mean opening up the floor plan and updating the kitchen, bathrooms, flooring and systems in one coordinated project.
Can we live in the house during a whole-home remodel?
Often, yes, if the work is phased. We plan the order so you keep a working bathroom and a place to cook where possible. For the heaviest phases, some families choose a short stay elsewhere.
Can you remove a wall to open up my floor plan?
Often, yes. We confirm whether the wall is load-bearing and what runs through it, then size a beam and supports so the opening is built to code and inspected.
What happens if you find problems behind the walls?
We stop, show you what we found, and price the fix before going further. Older homes can hide rot, outdated wiring or past patchwork, so we build time into the plan to open things up and handle surprises as written change orders.
Do you work on older and historic homes?
Do you help with design?
Yes. We help with layouts, materials and finishes, planned with how the space will actually be built in mind. See remodel design help.
Kitchens, Bathrooms & Basements
Kitchen remodeling · Bathroom remodeling · Basement finishing · Garage remodeling
Do you remodel kitchens?
Yes. Dom’s Workshop remodels kitchens in Newton, Plaistow, Kingston and across Rockingham County, NH, including layout changes, cabinets, counters, lighting, and the plumbing and electrical work that goes with them. See kitchen remodeling.
Can we live in the house during a kitchen remodel?
Usually, yes. We’ll help you plan a temporary kitchen so daily life keeps moving while the work is underway.
Do you remodel bathrooms?
Yes. We remodel bathrooms from the studs out: showers, tile, vanities, layout changes and accessible features such as low-threshold showers, grab-bar blocking and comfort-height fixtures. See bathroom remodeling.
Is a tub-to-shower conversion a good idea?
If nobody uses the tub, a larger walk-in shower is often a better use of the space. Keep at least one tub in the house if you have small children or are thinking about resale.
Can my basement be finished?
Most basements can be finished once moisture is under control. Ceiling height, egress for any bedroom, insulation and bathroom drainage also matter, and a new bedroom can affect your septic approval. See basement finishing.
Should I finish the basement or build an addition?
A finished basement uses space you already have. An addition gives you above-grade rooms with natural light. Your site, your needs and your septic system help decide which makes more sense.
Can my garage become living space?
Often, yes. Insulation, the slab, heat and the fire separation from any remaining garage all need to be addressed, and we plan for each one. See garage remodeling.
Process & Estimates

How do I get an estimate from Dom’s Workshop?
Call (978) 775-8642 or use the contact page. We talk through the project, visit your home, and follow up with a written scope and estimate.
What should I have ready for the first visit?
A list of what isn’t working, photos of ideas you like, and a rough sense of timing. For new builds and additions, bring any survey, plans or septic paperwork you have.
What does a residential general contractor do?
A residential general contractor plans and runs the whole job. That means scheduling and coordinating the trades, ordering materials, handling permits and inspections, and being your one point of contact from start to finish.
Who will I deal with during the project?
You’ll have one point of contact who coordinates the trades, the schedule and the inspections.
Do you take care of building permits?
Yes. We can handle the permits for your project. Each New Hampshire town has its own building department and review process, so we plan the timeline around your town’s requirements.
How do I compare estimates from different contractors?
Compare scopes, not just totals: what’s included, which items are allowances, and how changes and hidden conditions are handled. See how to choose a remodeler in Rockingham County.
Where can I find ballpark costs?
Our cost guides cover additions, whole-home remodels, kitchens, bathrooms and basements. Your actual price comes from a written scope for your home.
What size projects do you take on?
Everything from a single bathroom to additions, whole-home renovations and new homes. If a job isn’t a fit, we’ll tell you upfront.

What towns does Dom’s Workshop serve?
We focus on Newton, NH and the towns around it: Plaistow, Kingston, East Kingston, South Hampton, Danville, Atkinson, Hampstead, Sandown, Brentwood and Fremont. We also take projects across Rockingham County, including Exeter, Kensington, Seabrook, Salem, Derry, Londonderry, Windham, Epping, Raymond, Stratham, Hampton, North Hampton and Hampton Falls.
Do you build and remodel in Newton, Plaistow and Kingston?
Does every New Hampshire town have the same building rules?
No. The New Hampshire State Building Code applies statewide, but each town runs its own building department, permits and inspections, and zoning differs from town to town. We plan the timeline around your town’s requirements.
I’m on a well and septic. Does that affect my project?
It can. Many homes in the Newton area are on private wells and septic systems. Septic systems are approved for a set number of bedrooms, and new foundations have to keep their distance from the well, so we check both early in planning.
